My name is Zoe Sauvage. I am 14 and I have two sisters and a brother. Their names are Lucy and Melanie and my brother's name is Carter. Carter Is 12, Lucy is 15 and Melanie is 17. My parents are dead and Melanie takes care of us. Me and my family have lived in a tiny hut in the woods of northern Canada since modern civilization started controlling people's brains. No one knew we lived there and we didn’t want them to know either. My Nana had lived with modern humans and she changed a lot, for the worse. She started smoking and drinking. It's terrible. To survive we hunted for deer and fish, during the winter we would make animal skin coats and furry warm blankets and make fires on a daily basis. There is a small road near our hut if you go down the river. We know that there are humans somewhere near the road because they have long rope things (street wires I think) that let people look at bright boxes that hurt their eyes. Me and Carter like to go on the rope things from swinging on tree branches onto it. We did it at sunset when there were never any cars. There never were cars on that road normally but we still did it to be safe. Lucy and Melanie didn’t know that we came here, they don’t like to take risks so if they knew they would never let us go. One evening when we went, I had brought some wild berries to snack on. Carter went up and I was about to go on when we heard a car. Carter tried to get to the tree in time but he was panicking and kept getting stuck. I dropped the berries and tried to swing a vine to where he was. He sat down to try and make him less noticeable since he didn’t want to get hurt or cause a ruckus. The car came down the road. It stopped. The person came out. They took out their bright box. Their box made a chick noise. They left. Carter got down and we ran back home. We knew that it wasn’t going to be long before they found us...
