“Ow,” I peeped as the dentist was looking at my teeth. As if she didn’t hear me she continued.
“Do you play any sports?” she whispered as if we were in a library.
“Only chess” I whispered back. She seemed to get annoyed with me.
“Stop talking, I need to look at your teeth.” A tiny bit of anger shot through me, why bother asking me a question when you don’t want me to talk. That was odd, I never got angry, must just be that kind of Monday morning.
She started talking about how she played soccer and went on for about thirty minutes. When she was finally done my Mom dropped me off at school, if the dentist was bad this would be a whole other level.
The president was at our school. Yea you might be thinking isn’t that exciting, well this President was different, he was a horrible person. When I got to class everyone was looking straightforward, as if waiting for something or someone.
“Autumn! Get in your chair this instant,” murmured Ms.Kale. So much for going to the dentist, usually you slowly ease into class if you are late. Oh ya forgot to mention my name is Autumn, a student with extraordinary superpowers that few people know about, I can tell how to fix a piece of technology when it's broken.
About 10 seconds later the president walked in. I kept a smile on my face even though if I could I would be shooting daggers at him. Okay, that's a bit excessive I thought while he was talking with Ms.Kale. He goes to the finest schools every year to say hi and this year it was our school, when it comes to normal schools he won’t donate any money, the public schools don't have that much stuff, and barely any staff because there are so many more jobs with higher pays. Usually there would be a good amount of money at public schools but not in this country, Flora.
We each got to shake his hand starting at the front to the back of the class, I am in the back meaning I'll be one of the last. Every student shook his hand and some even asked for selfies. Then it was my turn, I stood upright as he approached my desk.
“Hi, I'm Autumn,” I said, trying to sound excited. He motioned for me to shake his hand.
“Hello Autumn,” he declared as if a statement. Then it happened. I got a message in my mind saying that his left arm had a wire in it that was broken and said it needed to be twisted back together. I immediately shook my hand free from his grip. He looked at me suspiciously trying to figure out what was wrong.
“Y..you're a robot,” I stammered.
“What an odd thing to say,” he said, his voice a bit weaker than before. He went on to the next person and the next obviously eager to get out of this school.
When he left Ms.Kale was furious with me for embarrassing the school and what not. She gave me detention for a full week. That didn't bother me too much, my brother and I weren't on each other's good sides and chess was canceled for the next 2 weeks.
After detention I walked home to find my brother named Steve waiting for me. He said that we were even and that we could continue life normally in peace. I invited him up to my room to hang out. He went on about video games and music. I decided to tell him about the president.
“The president came to our school today, he shook everyone's hand and I got a message saying his arm needs to be fixed meaning he is a robot.”
“Well you have to do something about it,” Steve whispered, not wanting mom to hear so she wouldn’t think he is a bad influence.
“Ya, I think I am going to post about it on Instagram,” I stated.
“Good idea, I’ll gladly help you,” he said. We spent the next half hour explaining why the president is bad, but we left out the part where I saw the error message. As soon as we posted it started blowing up we got some hate comments and some even said that we would get arrested. I packed my bags just in case.
The front door burst open, it was the FBI. Before I could even think of what to do two pairs of hands grabbed me. I tried to run but their grip was too strong. Then I blacked out.
The next thing I knew I was in a prison cell, well juniville. Things were pretty chill just eating, sleeping, and talking to other people. I decided I was going to escape because I needed to prove to people that the president was a robot. I couldn’t do it alone, so I decided to look for people who said something bad about the president like me. As soon as I was about to ask someone I caught sight of a boy, he looked familiar, that's when I noticed that he was Steve’s best friend!
“Thomas!” I shouted practically running towards him.
“Autumn?” he shouted back, I could hear the excitement in his voice. As soon as I got to him I pulled him off to the side. I told him my plan and he agreed to help. We were already whispe
As soon as I got to him I pulled him off to the side. I told him my plan and he agreed to help. We were already whispering but this part was the most important, so I wrote it on my sleeve with a pen, “tonight.”
We were at dinner when the bell rang to go outside, this was our chance. We walked together until we reached the fence, I saw a crack in the wall and I bumped him to show him I found a way out.
“Ladies first,” he whispered to me. We were in an area where very few people could see us. I crawled under barely making it through, the dirt smudged my face and the grass stained my clothing, but other than that we were good. I heard some yells and the police, I looked back to see people dragging Thomas back, I quickly grabbed his arms and managed to get him out of there. Then we started running.
The chase wasn’t that long, there was a forest nearby and I could tell the police were worn out. We made camp at an abandoned barn, the hay was actually pretty comfortable compared to the bedrolls we had in Juvenile.
The next day we set off to the president's house, luckily the prison was only a day's walk from there. We went through grasslands, forests, and even some small mountains. Just before we got out of a forest area I saw a gold gate out of the corner of my eye. I knew we were close to his house, so this must have been it. There were security cameras everywhere, I could tell everything was freshly washed. We went around the house into the backyard, it was around 8 so things were starting to get dark. We went through a red door with shiny handles and golden hinges. Did he really have to add that? I thought to myself. When we entered I almost started drooling, it was almost one hundred percent gold, the floor had wooden boards soundless and beautiful to look at, the walls grey as a wolf, and everything else from picture frames to stairs covered in gold. We decided it would be best to go in the vent to find him so people wouldn’t catch us, that made me wonder why there were barely any guards, probably they forgot it was their shift. The vent was warm and crawling with spiders, we went on for a bit and just as we were about to give up I saw a mouse, I almost screamed but I started hearing voices, it was the president.
We got out of the vent to find the president on live tv, this was our chance. He gasped at the sight of us.
“Surprised,” I sneered at him, I hadn’t forgotten I was in jail because of him.
“Aren’t you…” he trailed off deciding to look at the live instead. Thomas handed me a knife and I got to work. Thomas distracted him while I crept behind him. I grabbed his arm and tried to cut it off, it didn’t work. He started wiggling around like a monkey. Thomas took hold of him and I did it.
The people on the news screamed in horror as the wires in his arm were sticking out.
“What have y…” that was the president's last words before he died.
After that it was chaos, everyone was looking to see who was controlling him. That's when I got an alert.
“Oww, that really hurt!”
I glared at my little brother as he kicked pebbles at my ankle.
“Sorry.” he apologized in an unconvincing tone and then continued to bug me the entire way home.
“Cleo!” he yelled.
I jumped, no I was not a scared, I just didn’t know it was my brother James that called my name. He laughed at me and I rolled my eyes.
“Chicken” he taunted and continued to chant that over and over.
I snuck up behind him and yelled..
He screamed so loud his light brown hair stood up and his eyes widened with fear.
“Ha,” I retorted, “Who's the chicken now?”
He kicked more stones at me, I will have bruises the size of frisbees! We were almost home, thank goodness. I glanced at the house next to us… There was a for sale sign!
I opened my mouth to tell him, He beat me to it. He raced home to tell mom or something and left me standing there looking at the For Sale sign placed in the untidy lime green patches that probably was grass. My friend Sara lived there! I might never see her again, I was so overwhelmed with anger I ripped out a patch of grass and mud out of their lawn and threw it at the sign. I looked (my vision blurred by the tears) as the mud slid down the sign. The sign swung back and forth with a creaking noise.
I turned around and saw Sara watching me from the window, I was so embarrassed and never wanted to talk to her again. I glared at her and ran home crying.
When I got home I pulled open the door with such force it almost hit my dog who was sitting in front of it. I stood there and watched as Molly, my little pomeranian puppy with golden spots, ran up the spiraling staircase scared of the door hitting her.
I sighed and walked inside, James was sitting at the kitchen table reading, his book propped up by his water glass. Molly ran downstairs and zigzagged between the table legs and into the living room, she sometimes does this. I'm not sure why, but she scared James and he shrieked. Then unexpectedly his book fell, the water glass hit the ground, the sound of breaking glass echoed throughout the house.
Luckly Molly was in the living room when it happened. My brother just got up from the table and tiptoed through the shattered remains of what used to be a cup. After I finished cleaning the mess I heard a loud screeching noise outside and looked out the kitchen window.
“what else,” I muttered under my breath, “could go wrong today?”
I opened up the door and saw a moving van in our neighbours driveway. I ran outside to see if I could get Sara’s email so I could still talk to her, but to my horror, she had gone, left, I would never see her again! Some friend she is!
I glared at nothing in particular and sighed.
“I don’t care” I tried to tell myself, it still didn’t make me believe that, I was still upset. I repeated it but it did nothing.
Suddenly a jet black car arrived, it parked in the driveway. A girl appeared from the car, the sunlight gleaming on her short blonde hair. As she stepped out of the car a young boy followed, he was about the same age as my brother I assumed. The girl looked at me, her grey eyes appeared like they were staring into my soul, she seemed a bit unusual but at least I would have a friend. She waved at me and I waved back.
“Hello are you our new neighbours?” I asked politely
The girl nodded and asked in a high pitched voice: “What's your name?”
“Cleo, how about you?”
“I’m Lily Smith”
Our front door burst open. I nearly jumped. I looked to see if she noticed, hoping she didn’t. Her eyes grew wide and she looked quite startled. Finally, someone else who wouldn’t tease me for getting scared easily because they were scared themselves. She tried to hold in her laugh but failed and for a second I thought she was laughing at me! I realized she was laughing at the fact we both were really similar. I laughed too. I was glad she had moved in.
Lily told me she had to go, her dad said she could talk tomorrow though. I ran home and told my mom. She said Lily could come over the next day so that worked out perfectly. I was still upset about Sara but I tried to ignore it.
The next day Lily came over to my house, her voice sounded different almost robotic... She cleared her throat and her voice instantly changed back to her normal high pitch. We talked for a while and I went to get some markers so we could draw and my hand brushed up against hers, I wasn’t sure what was happening. The word: error, flashed in my mind over and over, I gasped and nearly fell over. What was happening?
I decided to forget about it but my mind didn’t let me. Every time I brushed up against her the same thing happened. Long story short: the day ended and the next day it got worse, let me explain, when I even got near her the message flashed in my mind. I couldn’t stand it. I even had dreams about it.
“James.” I called.
“Yea” he responded.
“I have something I need to tell you”
“I don’t care” he laughed
“Well I guess you’ll never know”
“Wait!” He told me, “Please tell me.”
So I told him, he laughed, “Wow that would make a cool movie”
“It’s not fake!”
“Sure” he responded sarcastically. I rolled my eyes and decided not to bother.
I walked outside and to my surprise I saw Lily, but she looked concerned, she looked at me like I was an alien from another planet and not her good friend,
“Hey, Lily!” I called
“My name is model-723.” she said in the most robotic voice I had ever heard “Who are you stranger?” she said.
“Stranger?” I laughed “I’m your friend Cleo.”
Her eyes flashed blue. I nearly screamed.
“Hey Cleo” She responded in a voice unlike the one she had just used and the blue in her eyes faded to their normal soft grey.
“H-hi” I managed to say. “W-what’s happening?”
“What do you mean?” She glared at me “what are you acusing me of doing?”
“You’re a robot” I screamed.
Her eyes flashed red. This time I screamed like really loud, really, really loud. Molly came running and barked at Lily Smith. Lily ran inside and left me bewhildered. I gasped for air and tried to speak, no words came out.
The next day I realized that Lily was gone! It looked as if she had never moved in! Was I just dreaming? I hoped so.
“Cleo!” James called from the other side of the street.
“Yes?” I asked.
Behind James was a boy with light hair.
“Is this your sister?” The boy asked James.
“Yes.” James responded.
“Hello” I called.
“Hi, I’m Noah, James’s new friend.” The boy introduced himself.
“Well nice to meet you” I said.
“Cleo” James called from a few houses down. “Noah has a sister your age, you may want to be friends.”
“Yes,” Noah interrupted “Her name is Lily Smith...”
